When to go
- An official evacuation order or air-quality emergency — go immediately, no debate.
- Air quality holds at “Unhealthy” (AQI 150+) and someone in the family is reacting to smoke.
- Fire-weather stays extreme and nearby fire activity keeps rising over several days.
- You’d simply rather not gamble the days before your flight — leave on your terms while transport is still easy.
Where to go
- North or to the coast for cleaner air and cooler temperatures — the Cantabrian coast (San Sebastián, Santander) is a few hours by train.
- Or relocate near Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas (MAD) so your flight becomes a short, reliable hop.
- Check your destination isn’t itself under fire-weather stress before you commit.
How to go
- Book flexible or refundable transport now — high-speed trains from Atocha/Chamartín reach the north and coast in a few hours.
- If driving, avoid routes through wildland or affected areas and keep the tank full.
- Confirm your onward flight and its change terms before you leave.
Grab-bag (10 minutes)
- Passports / IDs, boarding passes, cards and some cash.
- Medications and a small first-aid kit.
- FFP2 / N95 masks for smoke, water, phone chargers and a battery pack.
- A change of clothes and anything irreplaceable.
